Introducing the NAD C 658

Redefining the Architecture of Hi-Fi Playback

As we move deeper into the 21st Century the way music is distributed and enjoyed continues to evolve away from physical media to streaming. It also has moved away from analog to digital. The C 658 has incorporated these fundamental truths to create an entirely new type of component that combines a Network Streamer, a state-of-the art DAC, and many aspects of the traditional Preamplifier into a single highly cost effective package. And thanks to NAD’s exclusive Modular Design Construction, it will keep pace with the latest technology, not yet introduced, but inevitably coming in the future. In fact, an optional HDMI 4k switcher module is available now allowing the best sound from any of the many HDMI sources available (like game consoles and video STBs). While the C 658 immediately replaces (or adds) your Streamer, DAC, and Preamp, it also adds many new features you may not be aware of, like a Bluetooth aptX HD transmitter to use with your wireless headphones. The highly flexible outputs allow for a true balanced connection to powered speakers or amplifiers. Single-ended connections for amplifiers and subwoofers are also provided and include an adjustable subwoofer crossover executed perfectly in the digital domain. A highly sophisticated MM Phono input is also included along with line inputs for legacy analog components.

BluOS™ Enabled

Also on board is BluOS, the most sophisticated High Res streaming system available. BluOS natively supports over 15 streaming music services and indexing of over 250,000 tracks from local network sources. The C 658 becomes a node in the BluOS ecosystem allowing high res network streaming to 64 zones and control options for iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac OS phones, tablets, and desk top devices. BluOS also supports all major smart home controllers and is available in a wide range of products making it easy to create a whole house audio system with the C 658 at its heart.

Traditional NAD Performance and Value

The C 658 is part of our Classic Series of components which have an enviable reputation for giving Music Lovers more enjoyment for less money. If you want a solid block of hand–crafted aluminum with gold plated accents you’ll need to look elsewhere. If you want state-of-the-art performance and features in a sturdy no-nonsense package then you have the right address.

High Resolution in Every Detail

Most NAD components have been High Res for 45 years with very wide bandwidth, low distortion, and ultra-low noise. We just never had High Res source material to play. With High Res digital recording and streaming, combined with advanced technology like MQA, record companies are opening their vaults and releasing Studio Master Quality recordings. MQA decoding is available through BluOS Streaming content. The C 658 is pure High Res from input to output and features the ESS Sabre 32bit DAC , one of the best performing DACs on the market today with its 118dB Dynamic Range and incredibly low jitter spec. All preamp functions are executed in the digital domain including the same wide range non-truncating digital volume control used in our Masters Series components. This offers an incredibly short analog signal path that, rather uniquely, is identical for all volume settings. Sophisticated active power supplies provide super clean voltages to all circuits to keep noise and distortion at the edge of measurability.

Make the Speakers Disappear (It’s Not Magic)

The C 658 is also the first NAD stereo component to feature Dirac Live room correction*, the most sophisticated and effective room correction available. Dirac corrects the impulse response of your speakers, in addition to the frequency response of your room, for a truly transparent window into the musical performance. When the room resonances are tamed and the transient response is corrected, the result is magical. You have never heard your speakers sound this invisible or this good!

*Note: The C 658 includes a license for Dirac Live with the option for advanced users to upgrade to a Dirac Live Full Frequency version.

Master Quality Authenticated

Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) is a revolutionary end-to-end technology built into every BluOS Enabled amplifier to capture and deliver MQA music to your speakers in the purest quality. All BluOS Enabled players and systems include a powerful decoder and audio renderer for the millions of the MQA encoded songs, The MQA logo shown in the BluOS app indicates that the unit is decoding and playing an MQA stream or file, and lets you know that you are hearing exactly what the artist recorded and approved in the studio.

D 3020 V2 Hybrid Digital DAC Amplifier

The original NAD 3020 introduced a generation of music lovers to true high-fidelity sound. In the 1970’s, over a million people rediscovered their music when they placed a NAD 3020 between their turntable and loudspeakers. This little gem outshined amplifiers costing 10 times more with its big, warm, detailed sound. Today, the source is more likely to be a computer or smartphone than a turntable, but the ability to choose speakers that perfectly suit one’s taste is still a compelling argument for upgrading to an NAD amplifier. The D 3020 starts with the original NAD 3020 concept and brings it straight into the 21st century using the latest high-speed digital technology. Now with V2, we have refined the looks and added a Phono input for vinyl playback.

Reinventing an Icon

By adapting to today’s media sources and using state-of-the-art digital technology for the new world of digital music, the D 3020 puts a completely modern spin on a revered icon. The original designer of the 3020, NAD’s Director of Advanced Technology, Bjorn Erik Edvardsen, has been pivotal in developing the D 3020 for the new digital generation. Offering an excellent quality 24/192 DAC with 8 channels mixed to 2 for improved resolution, the D 3020 V2 represents the same kind of value-bending innovation that gave the original 3020 its legendary overachieving phono stage.

More Connected

The D 3020 offers inputs for your digital and analogue sources. Coaxial and optical inputs allow many different digital sources to be connected, from CD and DVD players, to set top boxes, media streamers like AppleTV, or satellite and cable receivers. There are also analogue inputs including a sophisticated MM Phono input. Far from just another set of sockets, this Phono stage includes highly accurate RIAA equalization, an Infrasonic Warp Filter, and features both high overload margins and extremely low noise. With V2 we’ve also added a PreOut for increased connectivity in the output stage.

Power that Delivers

Power output may sound small at 30W per channel, but like all NAD amplifiers this is very misleading, as a properly designed 30W amplifier can sound superior to a 100W amplifier from a lesser brand. With its very small form factor, the D 3020 will astound many for its ability to drive difficult loudspeakers to satisfying levels without adding noise or distortion.

Real World Performance

NAD rewrote the rules for amplifiers when designing the original 3020. Instead of letting laboratory test equipment have the last word, we made sure that we could properly drive real loudspeakers with real music for the real world. The D 3020 lives up to this promise through a unique implementation of NAD PowerDrive™ developed by Edvardsen, that allows low impedance drive (current) and high dynamic power (voltage) at vanishingly low distortion levels. This refinement of PowerDrive combined with a precision soft clipping circuit, lets the D 3020 sound even more powerful than it already is. An innovative Bass EQ circuit helps small speakers sound big without overdriving or damaging ported woofers.

Stream with Bluetooth

The D 3020 V2 delivers the convenience of wireless streaming with its Bluetooth® capability. Stream all your music from a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. The D 3020 even supports the highest audio quality Bluetooth, aptX®, which is becoming ever more popular for its excellent sound quality and low power consumption compared to Wi-Fi.

Mean and Green

The D 3020’s highly efficient design wastes less energy, requiring only 20% of the power needed by traditional Hi-Fi amplifiers. It’s like trading in a gas guzzling car for a hybrid vehicle. Standby power consumption is a miniscule <0.5W. NAD has taken amplification to new lows, with lower distortion, lower noise, and lower power consumption. NAD’s major focus is to find new technology that improves musical performance while consuming less power and using fewer non-renewable resources in manufacturing.

D 3045 Hybrid Digital DAC Amplifier

The NAD D 3045 is everything a modern amplifier should be; compact, energy efficient, powerful, silent, High Resolution capable, and packed with cutting edge features like DSD and MQA playback. NAD’s expertise in both digital and analog engineering is on full display in this flexible and affordable amplifier.

D 3045 Hybrid Digital Amplifier

HIGHER FIDELITY

High Res is to audio, what High Definition is to video. It is more lifelike and natural, and an altogether more enjoyable listening experience. With features like Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) the D 3045 can faithfully and accurately reproduce the full spectrum of sound encapsulated on the Studio Master. Until now, music lovers have only been allowed to hear an edited version of the full fidelity because our delivery systems, be it tape, vinyl, or CD, did not have the capacity to hold all the information contained in the Studio Master recording. With High Res downloads and streaming we can now enjoy exactly the same experience the artist heard in the studio when the recording was first made.

AMAZING CAPABILITY

We recognize that just because there is a new better format available doesn’t mean your present music collection will be discarded – far from it. So we have included all the inputs and circuits required to listen to all your current music, while also possessing the capability to fully exploit today’s best High Res sources. Especially notable is the Asynchronous USB input for attaching a computer which allows High Res streaming using one of the several High Res programs like Roon, JRiver, and Amarra. Asynchronous operation uses the D 3045’s precision clock (instead of the computers clock) to reduce jitter to a minimum and make the USB format work ideally for audio. For everyday convenience we have included Bluetooth wireless streaming featuring aptX HD, the latest 24-bit High Res version of Bluetooth that is being supported by more and more phones and tablets. Additionally, if you have Bluetooth headphones, you can also stream your non-Bluetooth sources wirelessly to your headphones, or you can plug in your wired headphones to enjoy the exceptional performance of our low impedance, high current, Headphone Amplifier.

FEATURES YOU WON’T FIND ANYWHERE ELSE

Love vinyl? The D 3045 features NAD’s super accurate, wide dynamic range, Moving Magnet Phono preamp to extract every last morsel of sound from your LPs. If you still play CDs, we have both analog and digital inputs. The digital inputs allow use of the advanced High Res DAC built into the D 3045. You can even send the sound from your TV to the NAD and seamlessly control the system using your TV’s remote by taking advantage of the HDMI ARC input. Complete your system by adding a subwoofer with the convenient Sub Out jack.

PERFORMANCE AND PRICE

The NAD D 3045 includes advanced capabilities usually only found in far more expensive components. High Res USB DACs? They start at about 3X the price of the D 3045. High Current headphone amplifiers start at the price of the D 3045 and go up from there. Power Amps featuring 60wpc and with the low distortion and high current capability of the D 3045 are rare at this price. Yet all these products are wrapped into one compact, energy efficient, and convenient package engineered by one of audio’s most iconic brands. 45 years of audio excellence is on full display with this innovative and versatile component. Just add your favourite music source and a great set of speakers to enjoy many years of sonic bliss.
